Mahouts stage stir, release elephants to woods

Mahout sleepsMahouts and Kavadis released the elephants from Dubare elephant camp into the woods in protest against their demand to make them as permanent employees, on Thursday.

They warned the forest officials of severe protests in future if their demands are not fulfiled at the earliest.

ACF M Shashidhar, RFO M S Chinnappa visited the spot and held a talk with the protesters. Since the Mahouts demanded that senior officials of the department must visit them, the protest will continue even on Friday.
There are 22 mahouts and 22 Kavadigas in the camp, of which only 12 have been made permanent.

The remaining 32 members are working as daily wage workers since several years. ZP former member R K Chandru led the protest and informed that though the mahouts and kavadis have been demanding the same since many years, their plea has been falling on deaf ears.

District Budakattu Krishikara Sangha President J P Raju said that the issue was brought to the notice of the governor too during his visit to Dubare.
Mahouts J K Annaiah, J C Bhaskar, J B Sathish and others took part in the protest.
