‘Modi abused Jafri when he called for help’

Gujarat Massacre

Gujarat Massacre

AHMEDABAD: A key witness in the Gulbarg massacre case has told a special court that chief minister Narendra Modi had abused former MP Ahsan Jafri  when he called him for help on February 28, 2002.

Imtiyaz Saeedkhan Pathan, the first star witness to give testimony, recounted events of that day and said when they asked Jafri why police hadn’t come to their rescue, the former parliamentarian told them that he would call up Modi for help. “When I asked him what Modi said, he said there was no question of help, instead he got abuses,” Pathan told court.

When a mob went on a killing spree at Gulbarg society a day after the Godhra carnage, Jafri, whose home had turned into a refuge, was making frantic phone calls to every one for help.

Sixty-nine people were killed in Gulbarg Society including Jafri, whose body wasn’t found. A young Parsi boy, Azhar Mody, also went missing from his house, the story of which became a Bollywood film Parzania. This film was banned in Gujarat. Pathan described the gruesome killings in detail how his family members and neighbours were butchered and women raped before his eyes.

CNC to continue struggle for homeland

NachappaThe secretary-general of the Codava National Council (CNC), N.U. Nachappa, said on Friday that the CNC would continue its peaceful struggle for autonomous Kodava homeland status to Kodagu, stating that a nation could ignore its minorities only at its own peril.

He was speaking to presspersons here. Quoting Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s speech in Kashmir recently, Mr. Nachappa said that the majority community should always protect the minority community, be it religious, social, linguistic or political cause. It was a rule that was firmly rooted in human rights. Therefore, any opposition to the CNC’s struggle would amount to violation of human rights.

The CNC had successfully put-forth its points in New Delhi on November 1, Mr. Nachappa said. There would be no meaning to celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava without fulfilling the demands of the CNC, he said.

The CNC members met the AICC general secretary, Oscar Fernandes, who, had promised them to engage them in a dialogue with the Union Government, Mr. Nachappa said.

The members also met Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily, who too promised support to the CNC’s struggle. Mr. Moily stated that he would take up the issue with the Prime Minister, Mr. Nachappa said.

The detractors of the CNC had claimed that Kodavas constituted only 18 per cent of Kodagu’s population. Even if it was the case, there was hope for the CNC that the UPA Government stood for granting demands for autonomy to any given specific area and any given minority community as stated by Mr. Chidambaram in his speech in Kashmir on November 3, Mr. Nachappa said.

The Supreme Court advocate and president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, M.N. Krishnamani, would attend the 18th Codava National Day celebrations here on November 21, Mr. Nachappa said.
