Mammootty plays the title role of a braveheart who fought the British in the jungles of Wayanad in the 1790’s. Popular Tamil-Telugu actor Suman plays the villain, Pazhaiveetan Chandu and Tamil actor Sarathkumar plays Edachena Kunkan, the chief lieutenant of Pazhassi Raja.
Thilakan dons the role of king Kurubranaad, who revolted and plotted against Pazhassi Raja. Jagathy Sreekumar dons the role of Kannara Menon, an employee of the British Government. Padmapriya and Kanihaa are the heroines. Manoj K. Jayan, Peter Handley Evans and Harry Key play pivotal roles in the film which has music by maestro Ilayaraja and songs penned by poet O.N.V. Kurup.
The producer of this big budget film is Gokulam Gopalan and it is the costliest film ever in Malayalam.
Battle scenes in this movie was shot in Madikeri, Coorg, in the hill ranges of Mandala Patti.
Shah Rukh Khan has dubbed the prologue of the Hindi version , The Tamil prologue of the movie was also given its due worth when superstar Kamal Hassan dubbed the prologue and the Malayalam version dubbed by Mohan Lal
