Special package: CPI(M) seeks clarification from MP on delay

cpimMadikeri: Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) I.R. Durgaprasad on Sunday sought Mysore MP A.H. Vishwanath’s clarification on the delay in releasing special relief package for coffee growers in Kodagu.

In a statement released to the press, Dr. Durgaprasad said that Mr. Vishwanath had led a delegation of growers to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma seeking a special package to waive loans and interest on loans taken by coffee growers of the district. Mr. Sharma had assured them of releasing the special package.

The Kodagu Growers Federation had recently alleged that pressure by some large growers to include their estate purchase loan and land purchase loan for waiver had delayed the release of the package. Mr. Vishwanath should clarify his stand on this aspect as well, he said.

The CPI (M) demanded Mr. Vishwanath to come out with a statement that he would not support the views of the large growers. Loans and interest on loans taken by only of small growers, who constituted 98 per cent of the growers in Kodagu, should be waived, Dr. Durgaprasad said. Mr. Vishwanath should inform this to the Union Minister, he added. He questioned the delay in the release of compensation for growers in Kodagu for loss of coffee crop owing to excessive rainfall in the last couple of years.

Dr. Durgaprasad blamed elected representatives of the district for failing to secure the relief in time.

The Kodagu unit of the CPI (M) would extend support to residents of Kutta, Nalkeri, Srimangala, Kanur, Nittur and surrounding villages who were planning demonstrations at Ponnmpet-Kanur road junction and Ponnampet-Hudikeri-Srimangla road junction on November 11 to protest against poor condition of the roads, he said.

The residents, who had reposed faith in Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly and Virajpet MLA K.G. Bopaiah, had realised that policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were not different than those of the Congress, Dr. Durgaprasad said.

The BJP Government had failed to fulfil the aspirations of people like the Congress. The Congress and the BJP had turned out to be two faces of the same coin, Dr. Durgaprasad charged.
