Two Madikeri roads to be widened in two months

The Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) meeting presided over by the municipal president, P.D. Ponnappa, here on Monday decided to take steps to widen Mahadevpet Road and Ganapathi Street, two prominent roads here, in two months.

Mr. Ponnappa asked Municipal Commissioner Srikanth Rao and the engineers to inform every household on the two roads orally to cooperate with the CMC. They would be given two months’ time before the road works were initiated. There were heated arguments between Congress councillor T.M. Aiyappa and the president of the Works Committee of the CMC, T.S. Prakash, over the width of the roads for widening.

Independent member K.T. Baby Mathew took exception to the excess gate fee collection at the Raja Seat and wanted the Raja Seat Development Committee to revoke the fees to the earlier level.

In place of it, a sum of Rs. 5 was now being levied on the visitors for entry to the Raja Seat garden. Mr. Razak endorsed the views of Mr. Mathew and said gate fee structure should be restored to Rs. 2 per ticket.

Both the councillors complained to the chair that visitors were also being fleeced in the name of parking fee at the Raja Seat. In certain cases, Rs. 25 per vehicle was being collected. It would demoralise the tourists and tarnish the fair name of Madikeri.
