Stranded elephant driven back into forest

Madikeri: A female elephant stranded in a paddy field at the tribal settlement of Karehadlu hadi near Thithimathi in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu since Tuesday, made it back to the forests on Wednesday, following the arrival of tamed elephants from a nearby elephant camp, according to information received here on Wednesday.Assistant Conservator of Forests, Thithimathi, Alexander told The Hindu that the elephant, which had strayed into field with its two-year-old calf, appeared to be in an intoxicated state.

The animal reportedly drank “puliganji”, the brew for making illicit liquor, normally kept buried in huge cans in forest areas and was seen lying in the fields.

Two elephants — Bharatha and Ashoka — were brought in to drive back the “sleeping giant” to the forests. Ashoka refused to go near the female elephant, which however walked back into the forest on seeing Bharata.

The animal, estimated to be 30 years old, looked healthy, Mr. Alexander said.

The calf too ran back to the forest, he added. -The Hindu
