Inclusion of Kodagu under Unesco heritage list opposed

MADIKERI: The Kodagu Growers’ Association has opposed the inclusion of Kodagu under the Unesco heritage list.

Federation office-bearer B T Dinesh has submitted a memorandum to Unesco representative, Wendi, who confirmed receiving all the necessary documents, including the memorandum opposing the inclusion of Kodagu under world heritage list through e-mail.

He also clarified that he had already handed over the documents to the world heritage panel for suitable consideration. The panel will in turn discuss the matter with the representatives of India and make a decision on the subject.

The federation has `alleged’ that some environmentalists in Kodagu, with the help of other associations outside the district were creating problems to the growers by urging the Unesco leaders to include Kodagu in the heritage list. “If Kodagu is added to the list, the growers cannot even cut the tree inside their estate for their own use,” they said.
