New policy will centralize sand extraction

Following the instruction of Karnataka high court, the state government has announced new sand policy. “It will require three months to implement the policy. The sand lease contracts have been extended till September in Kodagu district,” said M R Ravi, Kodagu assistant commissioner.

According to the new policy, the sand extraction and distribution system will be centralized through the department of public works. The committee will notify them after getting clearance from the government.

The department of public works will issue permits for sand extraction, transportation, storage and disposal. The department will also establish check posts to regulate sand transportation in the state.

During the financial year 2010-11, Rs.17,59,250 was collected as fine from illegal sand dealers.
